Steel Comment of the Week

"Pennsylvania would not be the state it is today without a rich history founded in the steel industry.  Today’s steel industry is just as important to the economy of the state and the entire country as it was at the turn of the century.  Steel is responsible for over one million jobs nationwide at a time of record unemployment.
In addition to putting Americans to work, steel’s strength, versatility and ability to combine with other materials to form new compositions offer many benefits to society. All sectors of manufacturing, including automotive and construction, depend on steel as does much of our nation's infrastructure.  Steel is also vital to our national security used in ships, tanks and body armor.
The industry is also ensuring it will be an integral part of our future, investing millions of dollars to find new ways to make steel with little or no carbon emissions. These voluntary efforts are the key to protecting our environment without damaging the U.S. economy even further.

It is important that we work to protect the domestic production of steel and steel products from unfair trade practices as well.  China, for instance, is one of the biggest fair trade offenders using illegal subsidies, illegal dumping, currency manipulation, and labor rights abuses to export cheap and even inferior or unsafe products.

Congressman  Tim Holden (D-PA)
